Giants sign Freddy Sanchez to two-year contract
Terms as soon as I track them down. We've known for some time that the Giants wanted Sanchez back as their second baseman for more than just 2010. They'll rip up the $8.1 million club option.

Freddie Sanchez Re-Signs for 2 years |

Not a surprise. After the injury fiasco of last season, this deal had to happen or we would have thrown Alderson away for nothing.

I don't like the timing. Why rush to be the FIRST free agent signed in the offseason?? Couldn't BS wait for the market to set itself??
And this rush is for someone coming off a torn meniscus surgery?? $6M a year is OK for a completely healthy Sanchez but if this is the start of his body falling apart........ |

Why rush to be the FIRST free agent signed in the offseason??
Uh, because it's Sabean? He *always* decides who he MUST sign, and does it as soon as possible, throwing "as much money as is needed". He had done that EVERY year for, well, quite a long time. |

Seems a very fair price for a guy of that calibre. We'd certainly have paid more and longer if it were not for his knee. Always been a big fan of Freddy
Sanchez, so I'm not going to denigrate Sabean for pulling the trigger early. It will be interesting to see what Orlando Hudson (a lesser player IMO) gets.
My guess is he gets more money.

Say Hey -
This was a must sign for the Giants. Seems like a reasonable amount. Will wait and see how the FA market goes. I do think Giants fans will be pleased with Freddy as the starting 2B and #2 hitter. geezer123 |

So Baggarly sez:
The Giants' medical staff knew that Sanchez would require left-knee surgery before approving the deal but signed off because it believed it could keep him on the field. and then: Sanchez didn't have the pennant-race impact the Giants anticipated, but general manager Brian Sabean called the second baseman a "targeted player." "...was able to be on the field..."???? How many games did he play with us, three? I guess I'm still bitter... |

Hard for me to blame the guy for being injured. It isn't like he didn't try like hell to stay on the field. And when was the last time you heard a
player apologize to the fans because he wasn't able to play because of injury? A humble MLB player....what a concept. That goes a long way to heal any
bitterness with me.
And Missy.......he played in 25 games for the Giants (102 ABs). Knowing what we know now.....that was probably WAY too many. It's a slight gamble because of the knee......but he is getting a $2.1 million pay cut from the option year that was on his contract (and $250,000 less than he made in 2009). He would NOT have signed for only $6 million per year if he wasn't coming off of the injury. Those are the gambles you have to take when ownership won't fully fund the team (a fact overlooked by most Giants fans). Besides......look at the bright side, $12 million for 2 years is still $2.5 million less than they paid Ray Durham in the last 2 years of his contract......and Ray was 37 in that last year.....Sanchez will only be 33. If he performs anywhere near his career averages, it will be one of the best contracts Sabean has ever negotiated. If he is damaged goods and does not perform well....it gives us more reason to bash Sabean. It's a win-win situation.

Pretty much what I expected. If he's healthy, it's not a terrible signing. I just wish he had a little more power and would take a few more walks.
Obviously, this deal had to be done because they gave up Alderson to get him. I'm also not convinced that Uribe will be back next year.

I pretty much guarantee Uribe won't be back. He will go with the money.......and honestly, though he performed well for the Giants in 2009, I don't
want Sabean to pay him as much as I believe he will get on the free-agent market. We were able to low-ball him this year......I don't see that being the
case for 2010.
I really don't see the Giants making much of a move in the free-agent market. Any big FA (what few there are out there) signing will require an increase in the payroll. I just don't see that happening. |

25 games sounds like more than I remember, but I admit my bitterness is showing.
Hey, here's another take: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/281838-san-francisco-treat-freddy-sanchez-proves-its-not-all-about-the-money?utm_campaign=marketing&utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=br_sfgiants By swapping the two-year extension for the one-year option, Sanchez is indicating one of two things. In my opinion the fans aren't going to be instantly forgiving of him, humble or not. He has to deliver. You know how fans are all about the performance. Many fans forgave Bonds' attitude because he flat-out performed. Many forgave Kent his attitude because he flat-out performed. If Sanchez can do that, the fans will forgive and forget, including me. But if he gets injured again the fans are going to jump all over Sabean & Co. |

On Uribe..IMO he had a career year. If he walks, I'm okay with it.

Hank - I tend to agree with you regarding the payroll. San Francisco is a huge market and yet our payroll is roughly that of the Kansas City Royals. Which
makes me believe that Neukom & Co. have no interest in building a WS caliber team. They're content with "being competitive" and playing
"meaningful games" in September. In order to put a championship team out there, it'll cut into their profit, so why bother? Why make a big FA
signing splash when the fans will come through the turnstiles for the mediocrity that 3rd and King has been churning out the last few seasons?
In a way, the new ballpark has been a real detriment to the ballclub. If the Giants were still playing out at the 'Stick, the club would be forced to field a championship team - it's the only thing that would get people through the turnstiles. If this club had been playing out there these last few seasons, they'd be averaging less than 10K a game most weeknights. |

More tidbits from the "braintrust" at 2nd & King:
Freddie Sanchez signs with the Giants on October 30, 2009. FIRST free agent signed in the offseason. a career .757 OPS 97 OPS+ as our number three hitter?? what kind of idiot would consider that?? oh yeah, the same "braintrust" that put a career .726 OPS 88 OPS+ as the "cleanup" hitter...... HOW the heck can this GM take this player who was half a season out from free agency, with a damaged knee, yet trade one of our highest ranked prospects and not ask for money in return??

Fishchum:
Yup. Another swindle from the Giants. Selling the new ballpark as our path to the championship. Then selling the cable deal as a way to a championship. Yet, all we see are stagnant payrolls, "competitive" talk, "meaningful" games in September, and the WORST middle of the lineup in all of baseball........ Yup. They've cornered the market on Kool-aid.....

Ken
The one constant through all the years has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again. |
