Back in the real news .....
Rockies decline options on Torrealba. It would be nice if Benji gets signed away since his tag is probably fairly high, and he comes in as a Class A FA. If we are lucky enough to see him go I wonder if Yorvit could be seen as a 1 year filler option while Posey grows in a platoon role. Torrealba probably is looking for a muti-year deal but you never know. Just a thought. |

Bam Bam gets to work right away. And I mean right away as in Monday. From the article:
He will be at AT&T Park on Monday for an intensive hitting clinic with four of his most important pupils: John Bowker, Nate Schierholtz, Travis Ishikawa and Brett Pill.

Wasn't Yorvit upset that the Giants traded him away in 2005 (for Winn?) Seems like he either assumed or was led to believe that he would take over after
Benito left and then the Giants got AJ Pierzynski and then the next year they got Mike Matheny and then he was traded. Can't imagine he'd be thrilled
with a one year contract knowing that he's just a stop gap until Posey is ready. He always seemed to have a chip on his shoulder.

If anybody is going to fill in before Posey is ready I'd rather see Bengie continue in that role and be his mentor, rather than someone from outside the
organization. The professional relationship is already there.

If we are able to get draft pick compensation for Benji Molina we take it and wave goodbye to the stretchy pants catcher. After losing Alderson, V and Barnes
from our crop in such a short period of time it is imperative we build back up what we can.
There is a handful of lesser catchers out there I wouldn't mind having instead of Benji if that means draft day joy. The hope is Gerald will be ready to take the reigns but incase he falters in ST or out of the April gate Blanco, Kendall, Yorvit (what young player isn't hurt after they get traded? They get over it) Bard, Rodriguez ... or hell even Whiteside who handles he staff well. The point is heat seekers for draft picks hopefully are deployed. And IMO getting Benji out of our line-up is rather important moving forward. To change our offensive attack and philosophy means riding ourselves of these men who can't score from 2nd on a base-hit. We need every run we can get and I can't count how many times Benji handicapped a innings rally by summonsing 3B coach stop sign on balls 99% of other player could have scored on. Despite the fact he was a offensive force most of the time in the box , out of the hitting zone it was annoying seeing the team fail in these ways. Move this squad forward. |

An "offensive force most of the time in the box"?!?!? Seriously? His OBP was a dismal .285 this season. That means more than 70% of the time he came
to the plate, he made an out. Out of 154 players with at least 500 plate appearances, Benji ranked 153rd in OBP.
The sooner the Giants rid themselves of hackers like Benji, the better off they'll be.

Kal:
Couple of factors will effect our catching situation. Does this franchise truly "go for the World Series" in 2010 or do they plan to be "competitive in 2010"?? As we have witnessed in the World Series and the playoff participants, there are the upper tier of contenders, the middle tier of pretenders and at the bottom, the "no chance" tier. We would be fooling ourselves if we think that we have been any better than pretenders since 2002. The subtraction of Jeff Kent made sure of that. But back to our current situation. If this franchise does not raise their payroll for 2010, why bother bringing in a "veteran" presence to help Posey? Just play him everyday and worry about other spots on the roster. The mishandling of Posey at the end of last season made sure that we know nothing about what we have, but the Twins cut bait when they decided on Joe Mauer and found a sucker to take AJ. We should have done the same last season by getting anything we can for our free agent vets, but alas, that isn't the "Giants' Way".... Unless we raise the payroll and get Matt Holliday and trade for BJ Upton, we're not winning the World Series, with or without a veteran presence at catcher.......

Catcher, obviously is not this team's biggest "concern" per se but we are at a crossroad nevertheless. Either the kid who is supposed to lead us
into the future is born into a starting role in 2010 thus completely rearranging the make-up of our offensive attack with our middle of the order base clogger
on his way out.
Or, what I predict…. No way Bochy hands the job over to Posey and we get a Vet to fill the role. Even if he was forced Posey better not struggle or give Bochy excuse to bench him because you know he will. If this happens I want it to be someone (anyone) else besides Molina who sits on a Class A status. Not only that. The pick is a tremendous boost as to the reason why I want him gone, but just as importantly to give me some sanity back. It has already been covered but the last 2 seasons have been laughable with Benji as a clean-up hitter and with rumors of Bochy potentially moving Panda into the 4 hole and Sanchez into the 3 I chose the nameless vet over Benji at this point, but first and foremost a Posey / Whiteside combo would suffice. I'll believe that when I see it however. … and I kind of feel sorry for bad mouthing Benji here. Don't get me wrong. He has gone above and beyond what this franchise could possibly ever have had expect out of the man. Over 80RBI every season in SF? When he was signed out of free agency I NEVER would have said that would be possible. Of all the sh*t Sabean has brought on board the past few years from Winn to Roberts to Renteria to Rowand nobody and I mean NOBODY earned their paycheck more than Benji Molina. Not to mention the Willie Mac Back 2 Back. When I reflect on good Giants Benji Molina nears the top of my list. Perhaps this sounds contradictory but it is what it is.…. I am pushed into a corner by our leaders on the Molina front and I don't blame Molina for any of my ill will over line-up construction. It should never have been his place to carry this team offensively. IMO the reason he had a much less productive year in '09 is because the franchise ran his ass into the dirt. I would not be surprise if in 2 years time Molina is hanging 'em up. He's already proven to be mentally soft. Now the physicality begins to break down. The bottom line is I'm down with anyone else hoping to move away from Benji . Be it Posey or no Posey we just need him out. Fundamentals, pitching, speed and defense. This team needs all these qualities not just the pitching.

Potential Type A and B free agents by positon | ||
|
From : http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/ask-ba/2009/269131.html
Below are the potential Type A and B free agents by position, listed in order of Elias ranking. Not all of these players have filed for free agency yet, and some have 2010 options that may be picked up by their current teams. Potential Type A Free Agents Catchers: Bengie Molina (SF). First Basemen: None. Second Basemen: Orlando Hudson (LAD), Placido Polanco (Det). Third Basemen: Chone Figgins (LAA). Shortstops: Marco Scutaro (Tor), Miguel Tejada (Hou), Orlando Cabrera (Min). Outfielders: Matt Holliday (StL), Jason Bay (Bos), Johnny Damon (NYY), Jermaine Dye (CWS). Starting Pitchers: John Lackey (LAA), Randy Wolf (LAD). Relief Pitchers: Jose Valverde (Hou), Mike Gonzalez (Atl), Rafael Soriano (Atl), Billy Wagner (Bos), LaTroy Hawkins (Hou), Rafael Betancourt (Col), Darren Oliver (LAA), Kevin Gregg (ChC), John Grabow (ChC), Octavio Dotel (CWS). Potential Type B Free Agents Catchers: Ramon Hernandez (Cin), Jason Varitek (Bos), Ivan Rodriguez (Tex), Jason Kendall (Mil), Rod Barajas (Tor), Yorvit Torrealba (Col), Miguel Olivo (KC), Gregg Zaun (TB). First Basemen: Fernando Tatis (NYM), Carlos Delgado (NYM), Adam LaRoche (Atl), Nick Johnson (Fla). Second Basemen: Felipe Lopez (Mil), Ronnie Belliard (LAD). Third Basemen: Melvin Mora (Bal), Mark DeRosa (StL), Adrian Beltre (Sea), Troy Glaus (StL). Shortstops: None. Outfielders: Marlon Byrd (Tex), Vladimir Guerrero (LAA), Xavier Nady (NYY), Brian Giles (SD), Garret Anderson (Atl), Randy Winn (SF), Mike Cameron (Mil). Starting Pitchers: Rich Harden (ChC), Andy Pettitte (NYY), Vicente Padilla (LAD), Erik Bedard (Sea), Joel Pineiro (StL), Braden Looper (Mil), Jon Garland (LAD), Doug Davis (Ari), Randy Johnson (SF), Jason Marquis (Col), Justin Duchscherer (Oak), Carl Pavano (Min). Relief Pitchers: Scott Eyre (Phi), Brandon Lyon (Det), Kiko Calero (Fla), Guillermo Mota (LAD), Chan Ho Park (Phi), Bob Howry (SF), Joe Beimel (Col), Will Ohman (LAD), Doug Brocail (Hou), David Weathers (Mil), Russ Springer (TB), Fernando Rodney (Det), Brian Shouse (TB). The Twins won't get compensation for Cabrera because he has a clause in his contract preventing his team from offering him arbitration. Takashi Saito qualifies as a Type A but isn't listed above because he gained free agency when the Red Sox outrighted him from their 40-man roster, rather than declaring it after they declined his 2010 option.

Rumor has the Mets pursuing Molina.
I don't believe in the whole veteran tutor for anyone. Name a great player that needed to be "eased" into stardom. I can't think of any. Buster Posey is supposed to be our future. We have started his clock by mishandling him at the end of last season. Hopefully it won't happen again this season.....

Baggs sez:
From everything I've been told, the Giants are open to bringing back Molina on a one-year contract, but probably not for anything more than the $6 million he made last season. More at: http://blogs.mercurynews.com/extrabaggs/2009/11/10/hot-stove-notes-molina-is-type-a-personality-a-pudgy-alternative-holliday-vs-bay/ And Posey may or may not be "great." Right now I'd settle for "pretty damn good." |
