Bowker pulled from Fresno game, likely coming to San Francisco Wednesday, July 08, 2009 Bowker pulled from Fresno game, likely coming to San Francisco A writer from the Fresno Bee just called to say John Bowker has been pulled from tonight's game in Fresno after hitting a first-inning double, and it's my understanding the Giants are going to promote him for tomorrow night's game against San Diego. Bowker, who hit 10 home runs in 328 at-bats for the Giants last year, is destroying Triple-A pitching this year. Said to be more selective at the plate than he was as he slumped badly last year, Bowker is batting .345 with 17 homers, 63 RBIs and a ridiculous 1.055 OPS. My guess is the Giants will option Ryan Sadowski to Fresno to clear a roster spot. Sadowski has done an excellent job in three starts, but the Giants will not need a fifth starter again until July 20 in Atlanta, and they can always recall him then. It would be another bad decision is sending down the wrong player. Sadowski is the 5th starter, he goes down and someone gets sick or hurt and the Giants are in the 10 day limbo where he can't be recalled. Outfielder for outfielder makes the most sense. Sadowski is the #5 starter and the Giants won't need a start from the #5 starter until June 20th. Until then it doesn't hurt to have a deeper bench of position players. With that said both Lewis and Aurillia should be DFA.

I would have thought with the injury to RJ that Sadowski would be #4 and Sanchez would be #5. Of course, I am in Ireland.....what do I know.

I think it's clear that they'll send Sadowski down (because they don't need him to 10 games) and then recall him in 10 days. At that time, I hope that they DFA Aurilia, and keep Bowker. Once Aug 1 rolls around, there is no reason to start Winn and sit Bowker (i.e., the "showcasing for trade" idea is completely shot) so hopefully Bowker is up for the rest of the season, playing mostly LF but spot starts (or double switch, or defensive flexibility) to 1B.

If they bring up Bowker, there's one too many outfielders. Of course, they'll probably just DFA Andres Torres - which would be a shame. Ditto. Winn is hot for the first time this season - are they going to sit him NOW? Last 10 games (since June 28) 40 ABs, 43 PAs, 14 H, 3bb, 5 2b, 1 3b, 7 rbis .350/.395/.525/.920 Again, I hope that when Sadowski comes back in 10 days that they DFA Aurilia, and keep Bowker. Once Aug 1 rolls around, there is no reason to start Winn and sit Bowker (i.e., the "showcasing for trade" idea is completely shot) unless Winn continues on his hot streak. But hopefully Bowker is up for the rest of the season, playing mostly LF. He's already used up an option year this year (sending him down and back won't change anything) and he'll have one option year left next year, but I hope they give him a 2-month "extended spring training" to show what he can do in the majors : for next year, when Winn is gone.

To say I wouldn't care if we got nothing at all for him. If you aren't going to be around next year minus well get started with players who will be if possible. If it doesn't hurt the team so bad, which I don't think starting Bowker everyday would, then go for it. I wouldn't shed any tears.

Bowker has more HRs than Travis and Nate (and Winn and Lewis) combined. He has more walks than strikeouts. Heck, he has more than TWICE as many walks as Travis and Nate put together. Now is as good a time as any to see if he can show some power, or get walks, while resting Winn and Rowand before the AS break. This team could use some extra pop in the bat department. Bowker may have some. After the break, the team travels to PIT, ATL, and COL. Those are great places to see if Bowker can knock a few out. And Nate has been a little cold of late - a little competition might do him a world of good. But the starting spot he should be taking (at least half the time) is Winn's. Heck, I'm disappointed we aren't seeing more of Torres. Hopefully after the break Aurilia will be DFA'd and JB can take over his backup role at 1B (as well as start in LF at least half the games).
