With the Giants performing at 41-34, they have already exceeded my expectations.
I think the best target for the Giants would be to target Jermaine Dye and stick him in LF rather than RF. Nate
would still be the RF and Winn would become the 4th OF/ Utility OF
I believe this would be the better target because we could probably get him with only give up second tier prospects since we
would assume the entire contract.
My thinking is a package of John Bowker, Kevin Pucetas, and/or Merkin Valdez would get the job done. Although these players may all turn out to be decent role players, none in my opinion will become anywhere near a franchise type player.
It will be interesting to see how the White Sox perform in July since right now their 38-38, trailing the Detroit Tigers by 4 games. Hopefully they will have a bad month so they will become sellers.
On the other hand as much as I would like to have Victor Martinez, I believe he will cost us too many premium pitching prospects. He will be a free agent after 2010 season and there is no way Cleveland is going to trade him before the July 31 deadline without getting premium talent in return.
Hopefully Chicago will have a losing July where Dye becomes expendable.
If we can get a power hitter simply by taking the entire contract and give up second tier prospects rather than forking out premium talent I'm all for getting that big bat before the July 31 deadline and see how the second half of the season unfolds.
If the Giants do make it to the playoffs, they will be dangerous. Opposing teams will be seeing more of Lincecum and Cain and less of Zito and the #5 pitcher. The critics will continue to say that we don't have much of an offense. Although this may true to an extent, when Lincecum or Cain pitches the opposing teams don't seem to have much of an offense either!
