Twins - Demoted Lohse, Recalled Bonser
Minnesota Twins - Optioned P Kyle Lohse to Rochester; recalled P Boof Bonser. At the beginning of the season, I thought the Twins rotation of Santana/Radke/Silva/Baker/Lohse with Lirano to spare would be one of the best rotations in baseball. Instead, a quarter of the way through the season, Twin starters have a 6.43 ERA, making my prediction wron awfu differently accurate. The Twins probably did the right thing with Silva, replacing him in the rotation with Liriano, who's certainly earned the chance. Bonser is generally known as "that other guy in the Pierzynski trade" but after an underwhelming minor league career, he's had a nice start with the the Red Wings and is the best in-house replacement while Lohse gets whatever together again in the minors. After Bonser, unless the Twins make a trade, the next short-term fix is to purchase Pete Munro's contract, which isn't as interesting any idea given that Munro hasn't been very impressive the last couple of years. Then, you either really reach with Mike Smith or rush up one of the Harben/Simonitsch/Harben/Jones quartet, all of whom are decent (or better) prospects. The Twins seem unlikely to do the latter, given how long it took them to commit to Santana and Liriano, both of whom were better prospects than any player mentioned in this entry. I'm guessing the team wishes they had trade Lohse in the offseason; they're not getting much from him now.
