(Norwich, Conn.) -- Norwich Navigators All-Star Rightfielder Dan Ortmeier, 24, has been called to the Major Leagues by the San Francisco Giants and will join the Giants against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix tonight in time for their 9:40 p.m. (Eastern Time) game.
Ortmeier becomes the second Norwich player this year called directly from Norwich to San Francisco, joining Righthander Jeremy Accardo who was called up May 2 and is still currently in the Major Leagues. Dan becomes the tenth former Navigator currently on the Giants roster, including Accardo, RHP Matt Cain (2004), RHP Kevin Correia (2003), RHP Brad Hennessey (2004), LHP Noah Lowry (2003), RHP Scott Munter (2004), LHP Jack Taschner (2003, 2004), Catcher Justin Knoedler (2004, 2005) and Shortstop Angel Chavez (2004).
Ortmeier had one of the most remarkable seasons in Norwich franchise history. At the time of his call-up he was batting .274 with 20 home runs, 35 stolen bases and 79 RBIs. His 20 home runs and 35 stolen bases make him the only member of the unique 20/20 club, with at least 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases. Dan is the first player in Norwich franchise history to put up 20/20 numbers and only two other players in the Eastern League have done it since 1996 (Marlon Byrd, Reading 2001 and Todd Dunwoody, Portland 1996).
This year he was named to both the Eastern League mid-season All-Star Game and post-season All-Star team. The promotion comes after an injury-filled 2004 season with the Navigators when he spent time out of the lineup with three different injuries, including a season-ending concussion in a collision with Second Baseman Jay Pecci August 19 in Trenton.
He has been consistently ranked among the Giants top 30 prospects by Baseball America since being drafted. Dan was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee but grew up and lives in Highland Village, Texas. He was drafted by the Giants in the 3rd round of the 2002 draft from the University of Texas-Arlington after being tabbed by Baseball America as the Southland Conferences second best professional prospect.
