A little of both. He's a better talent than you ussually see in a 6 year FA. Ussually systems retain 6 year FAs with his talent by putting them on the 40 man, but since he grew up near Fresno, it seemed like a natural fit for the Giants and so he was given an out by the Tigers. He had a September call up in 01 and went 1-6, with a 5.8 era but with good peripherals, and was expected to be a part of the rotation in 02 before the colitis. He was rusty as a gate last season after missing two years, so we really need to wait for the season to start to see what we've got, but if he returns to pre-condition form, he could end up a 3/4 SP.
