Well, that's what happens when you've cleaned out your farm system every year, over a number of years. They have nothing to trade to the "sellers", unless they give up talent from the big club.

Too bad Bowie Kuhn refused to allow Charlie Finley to flat out sell players to the Yankees (which was actually a common practice for preceeding decades). That's about the only way Cashman would be able to bring about significant positive additions without creating a hole elsewhere.
