Dave,

I think the Giants are stuck with Alfonzo for the duration of his contract unless they basically give him away for next to nothing and eat most of his contract. I like the idea of trading him for a serviceable starting pitcher, but that's probably a reach.

The Giants had to live with two years of 8 million "dead money" with Nen's contract. This year, 18 million on Bond's contract. I say, just because you're stuck with Alfonzo's 8 million in 2006 doesn't mean you have give him most of the playing time at third. Assuming Bonds returns (granted, a big assumption), Feliz should be giving the starting job at third. It will be Bonds in Left, Winn in center, in Alou in Right, with Linden and Ellison as the backups.

In that case, Alfonzo becomes a bench player as an occasional starter at third and a pinch hitter. An expensive bench player for sure, but not "dead money" either.

Of course if Bonds' problem persists, then it's probably Feliz back to LF and guess who back at third. In fact, the organization may be holding on to Alfonzo as an "insurance policy" for just that scenario.
